More than 100 years ago, Dr. Maria Montessori began asking a groundbreaking question: What happens when we truly observe and trust the child?
As one of Italy’s first female physicians in the late 1800s, Dr. Montessori brought her scientific background and careful observation to the study of child development. Through years of research and working with children, she discovered that the characteristics at each stage of human development are unique and that the foundation of the whole personality is laid during the early years of life.

These discoveries became the foundation of the Montessori approach which is an educational philosophy built around respect for the child, hands-on learning, purposeful activity, and the belief that education should support the development of the whole person.
Today, more than a century later, Montessori continues to be practiced around the world. Modern research in child development and neuroscience continues to reinforce many of the principles Dr. Montessori identified through her observations: that children learn best through active engagement, meaningful experiences, and environments that nurture curiosity, independence, and connection.
